The First Ever KB4K Event Is On

The first ever 'Kiteboarding for Kids' Fundraising Competition kicked off at the Opening Ceremony at Cabarete’s Vela Voy Voy. The doors opened on Wednesday night of February 18 at 7pm.

Banners from local kite schools such as DARE2FLY, LEK, EH, KITE CLUB, and FORCE 10 lined the railings of the restaurant as well as kiting manufacturers: DAKINE, STARKITE, AND BEST. Kiters arrived, registered, and enjoyed a Dominican dinner prepared by the cooks at Voy Voy. Special appearance was made from the United States: the Bolsted family from Portland, Oregon. Carol (2nd place endurance winner at Hood River at 2008 Kiteboarding for Cancer Competition) and Tony Bolsted (1st place endurance winner at 2008 Kiteboarding for Cancer Competition at Hood River), Shane Gromley and Grom Gromley. All four in the family registered for the three day event. Countries represented were Spain, France, Canada, USA, Holland, Germany, Belgium, United Kingdom, and Australia. Laurel Eastman from LEK opened the evening’s ceremony with a warm welcome, and Cabarete’s own Pro rider Susie Mai translated in Spanish. Kee Park, neurosurgeon and benefactor, from the United States also welcomed the crowd and explained that KB4K was germinated after he attended the Kiteboarding for Cancer at Hood River, Oregon which raised $100,000 last August. The ambiance was lively, and excitement for the next day’s endurance race filled the air. Members of the KB4K event planning team were present except Mick Nelmes, the webmaster.
